NCCEE Teaches Financial Survival Skills to AmeriCorps Members AmeriCorps members earn a stipend of $1,000 per month. NCCEE partnered with the NC Governor’s Office and the State Employees’ Credit Union to bring them crucial financial training. The October 18 AmeriCorps event included orientation, training and swearing-in for new members. The NC Governor’s Office reached out to NCCEE with a request to teach the often-teenage workers how to manage their limited funds. SECU stepped up to help with the event, since the financial literacy presentation was billed to be a popular one. Presenters were not disappointed; each session had 75 enthusiastic attendees. Many of the participants were perplexed when they used NCCEE’s resources to analyze their financial outlook—they seemed to think that they would have a higher standard of living over the course of their service. NCCEE and SECU staff used special-made budgeting worksheets to help individuals make realistic plans and engaged in an activity to emphasize the costs of making ends meet by going into debt. The Governor’s Office expressed satisfaction in the helpfulness and popularity of the sessions and noted that this session would be a good one to hold in the future. |
