North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis Addresses Parents and Students About Financial Literacy
WHAT
On Friday, May 18, 2012, nearly 80 students in grades 4 through 12 from Charlotte and surrounding areas were recognized for their achievements as young investors during the 26th Annual North Carolina Council on Economic Education’s Awards Banquet. The ceremony recognizes winners of various statewide competitions focusing on economics, personal finance and entrepreneurship. Among those competitions are the Stock Market Game™ and the Capitol Challenge, sponsored by Fidelity Investments.
Throughout the school year, 8th grade students learned the principles of investing through The Stock Market Game™, an exciting online investment simulation game. Students worked in teams to grow their $100,000 virtual cash accounts into top-performing portfolios, while learning important math skills, financial concepts and 21st century skills.
In a similar competition for middle schoolers, The Capitol Challenge paired North Carolina General Assembly members with middle school teams from their home districts to participate in the Stock Market Game™. The teams with the highest portfolio values from both the Stock Market Game™ for 8th graders and The Capitol Challenge were awarded at the banquet.
