North Carolina Council on Economic Education: Promoting Economic and Financial Literacy Programs Since 1970

In 1970, the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE) was founded with one goal in mind — to enhance and advance economic and financial education for K-12 educators and students of North Carolina.

Today, our non-profit organization provides professional training and assistance to approximately 1000 North Carolina teachers a year focusing on economics and personal finance. Through our academic competition programs, we directly reach more than 15,000 students a year and indirectly reach another 100,000+ via better-prepared teachers. With support from private businesses and foundations, as well as through partnerships with state agencies, the NCCEE is a tremendous example of an effective public-private partnership.

What is Economic and Financial Literacy?

Essentially, economic literacy refers to the knowledge and skills that allow a person to make wise, informed decisions, both financial and other, that will affect one’s quality of life.

For 50 years, NCCEE has been committed to fostering economic and financial literacy in primary and secondary schools throughout North Carolina:

We inform policymakers as advocates for economic education and financial literacy initiatives in the public schools, teaching kids healthy money habits from an early age.

We work with the Council for Economic Education to develop and distribute unique field-tested materials for use in the classroom.

We work through a network of university-based Centers for Economic Education and teacher ambassadors to facilitate programs at the local level.

We provide professional development and economic literacy training through workshops, seminars, and university-hosted events for secondary and primary school teachers at no cost to teachers or schools.

We work with the NC Department of Public Instruction to distribute standards-based curriculum resources at no cost to teachers or schools.
